Audition Process

Free choice solo piece

Candidates will be asked to perform a solo piece, which should be the equivalent standard of Grade 5 or above. The piece should be no longer than 5 minutes.

Quick study piece

At the audition the applicant will be presented with a piece of music, previously unseen and will have 20 minutes to prepare, before being asked to perform this to the audition panel. The purpose of the quick study is to see how well the applicant can prepare within a short amount of time and to see how they adapt to coaching from the panel.

1 hour ensemble rehearsal 12pm-1pm

This ensemble will be formed of all applicants attending auditions. This is the main focus of the day. The NYGE Musical Directors will have the opportunity to see how well they respond to their coaching. Whilst sight-reading naturally forms part of this ensemble audition, the emphasis is not on sight-reading, but rather on how they develop and respond during the session.

*** Auditions will take place either side of the open rehearsal and you will be notified of your time in advance (after the audition closing date). Please bring a packed lunch, remember your guitar support, and a photocopy of the piece you are playing to give to the audition panel. ***
